Distinguished and Famous people from Peak Hill

🤝 Charles Leslie Frost

Charles Leslie Frost was born at Peak Hill, probably in 1897, and later worked as a labourer at Dubbo. In 1937 he opened the meeting that launched the Aborigines Progressive Association, drawing attention to conditions on Aboriginal reserves. The organisation sought changes to discriminatory laws, improved living conditions and full citizenship rights with parliamentary representation. Frost subsequently became president of its Dubbo section. His Peak Hill beginnings connect the town with an organised political movement whose concerns reached well beyond one district. The work involved meetings and sustained advocacy against a system that denied Aboriginal people authority over their own lives.

📻 Ossie Mingay

Ossie Mingay was born at Peak Hill in 1895 and entered the postal and telecommunications service as a teenager. Technical training and wartime signals work led towards radio engineering, education and publishing. He established the Australian Radio College and developed trade publications whose editorials ranged well beyond equipment and sales. When asked to restrict his comments to the trade, he eventually acquired the paper and continued writing on his own terms. His career gives the town a connection with the growth of Australian broadcasting and the lively technical press that helped explain and argue about the new medium.

🎖️ Sir William Yeo

William Yeo attended Peak Hill Public School and returned from First World War service to buy a local farming and grazing property. Work as honorary secretary of the Peak Hill returned-servicemen’s sub-branch developed into a long organisational career. Elected New South Wales RSL president in 1949, he held the position for twenty years. His presidency also involved political divisions and contested decisions, making the history more complicated than a list of honours. The local connection spans education, farming and the beginning of public work that eventually occupied much of his life in Sydney.
